Lalleshwari - Great Poetess and Saint of Kashmir

Lalleshwari (लल्लेश्वरी) (1320–1392), also known as Lalla, Lal Ded or "Lal Arifa".She was a mystic of the Kashmiri Shaivite sect, and at the same time, a Sufi saint. She is a creator of the mystic poetry called vatsun or Vakhs, literally 'speech'. Known as Lal Vakhs, her verses are the earliest compositions in the Kashmiri language and are an important part in history of Kashmiri literature.

Lal Ded and her mystic musings continue to have a deep impact on the psyche of Kashmiri common man, and the 2000 National Seminar on her held at New Delhi led to the release of the book Remembering Lal Ded in Modern Times. A solo play in English, Hindi and Kashmiri titled 'Lal Ded' (based on her life), has been performed by actress Mita Vashisht all over India since 2004.

Biography

Lalleshwari was born in Pandrethan (ancient Puranadhisthana) some four and a half miles to the southeast of Srinagar in a Kashmiri Pandit family. She married at age twelve, but her marriage was unhappy and she left home at twenty-four to take sanyas (renunciation) and become a disciple of the Shaivite guru Siddha Srikantha (Sed Bayu). She continued the mystic tradition of Shaivism in Kashmir, which was known as Trika before 1900.

There are various stories about Lal Ded's encounters with the founding fathers of Kashmiri Sufism. One story recounts how, when Sheikh Nooruddin Noorani (Nund Rishi) was born, he wouldn’t feed from his mother. After three days, Lal Ded arrived and fed him herself. She said to the baby that, since he hadn’t been ashamed to be born, why should he be ashamed to drink from his mother’s breast?

Her poems (called vakhs) have been translated into English by Richard Temple, Jaylal Kaul, Coleman Barks, Jaishree Odin, and Ranjit Hoskote.

Lal Vakh

Lala Vakh, literally mean sayings of Lala or Lala Ded...

Lal Vakh in Kashmiri:

"yi yi karu'm suy artsun
yi rasini vichoarum thi mantar
yihay lagamo dhahas partsun
suy Parasivun tanthar"

Translation:
"Whatever work I did became worship of the Lord;
Whatever word I uttered became a prayer;
Whatever this body of mine experienced became
the sadhana of Saiva Tantra
illumining my path to Parmasiva." -138

The soul, like the moon,
is now, and always new again.

And I have seen the ocean
continuously creating.

Since I scoured my mind
and my body, I too, Lalla,
am new, each moment new.

My teacher told me one thing,
live in the soul.

When that was so,
I began to go naked,
and dance.

Let me in your arms cried my soul,

Hear me, this heart bleeds, hold me as I fall again and again..

A silence kills, no more can I take .. I didn't walk there but you said to...

How do I live without you...love me true ...

My world is darkened and my fears are huge...if I didn't walk then that was for a fear of losing you...or break within ...

I need you now hear me say ..let me walk by you...

Watch me cry... would you be happy...

I await for your… Continue

You were among all that lied.

Didn't I say before I wouldn't walk by the river but you said trust again and I did...

The one that taught me to trust no more walks by me...

Now where else do I go...which direction do I take...

Go not away from me but I will if you wouldn't want me by you..

I ll fly away to distant lands may be a silence you did hear from me but not again a word I say...

You left me alone as all did..

I hate you you liked you ll stay… Continue

Do you love me?

Posted by Hema Patel on November 6, 2017 at 6:05pm 0 Comments

A lover asked his beloved,

Do you love yourself more

than you love me?

The beloved replied,

I have died to myself

and I live for you.

I’ve disappeared from myself

and my attributes.

I am present only for you.

I have forgotten all my learning,

but from knowing you

I have become a scholar.

I have lost all my strength,

but from your power

I am… Continue

A distant land am I,come not near thee,

If love had boundaries I would cease these feelings of my heart...

I do as an ocean but fear those broken pieces,

No more strengths do I have to mend a broken heart..

Love you immensely from afar,

Pains are unbearable no more can I bear...

Will love you as always, miss me not,

If I m gone,

Remember I did truly but my fears warn me of wounds,

And scars I wish not see again...

May heavens bestow… Continue

And you know

Whatever you doing is

Searching yourself

In the wound of others

In the lusty wishes

In the broken hearts

In the stary night

And you found nothing

You have illusions

Illusions of love

You are waiting

For the same person like you

So much broken

So much unloved

So much transparent

And you fear

When you meet the same

You wanna hold

You wanna kiss

And you can't

Again you don't wanna… Continue
